The Chevrolet WWA Collegiate Challenge Final Standings (Press Release from the WWA) All of the rumors about Lake Havasu on spring break are true…the boating life, massive amounts of people, and incredible atmosphere with plenty to see and do created the perfect spot for the Chevrolet WWA Collegiate Wakeboard Challenge. The event held on March 18-20 proved to be successful with colleges from across the nation, 300 pulls over the weekend, and the picturesque rocks and canyons that surrounded the area. Everyone was stoked at the location and activities Lake Havasu had to offer. So I marked in my schedule that I had a meeting with God that night to go over the weather. On Saturday it was supposed to rain, but luckily clouds spotted the sky with the hot sun poking through. The water was calmer and the riders rode well, except for Ben Losch from ASU who unfortunately broke his femur trying a crow mobe. The women and wakeskaters had to deal with rough water, but charged as much as they could to advance their teams to finals. That night we had a party at the El Sarape restaurant across the street, known for the best margaritas and tortilla soup in town. They hooked us up with a taco bar and plenty of room to cut the rug. By the wee hours of the morning the place was packed with riders and spring breakers. The Ennen brothers circled around with cameramen following them with local Havasu ripper Brian Francis plugging everyone in on how to really party. After a busy Saturday night, riders dragged their feet to finals on Sunday a little bit later, which was unusual because everyone went to bed so early the night before. Sunday was perfect because it was bright and sunny, the water was calm, and more tents came in, like Truckin’ Magazine’s bikini contest, bands played, the Chevrolet display, motoX exhibitions, and supped-up golf carts bopping around. The teams WWU, UF and ASU were close together, but Losch’s injury affected ASU a little bit. UF’s women, wakeskaters and Jeremy Martin brought their school totals up, but no one could come close to the Nick Ennen, Jeff Olsen, and Mike Cardoza on the WWU team. WWU won the Chevrolet Collegiate Challenge, taking home a $3,000 grant and winner Nick Ennen pocketed an extra $500 for winning Men’s Finals. One of the greatest bonuses of the contest was the comradeship between the sponsors, who made me feel welcome and happy to be a part of the WWA. Without them this event wouldn’t have been possible. I respect and admire how well everyone got along and look forward to upcoming events with them. A big thanks goes out to Al Alvarez from Chevrolet, Joker’s Wild Promotions, Lani Farmer from Malibu, Curtis and Ryan Lamos from Nautique, Jay Warren and Matt Brown from Skier’s Choice, all the riders and judges, Jimmy Redmon, Tony Finn, and all the schools that came out. These people added excitement to the contest and Lake Havasu, were vital to the structure and organization of this event, and the memories with them are unforgettable. Watch out for the footage from the event on the Vortec Power Hour aired in May. Check your TV guide for listings and be sure to watch for our ad and article in WakeBoarding Magazine.
